How to rank higher on Google Maps (for free)

What is on this page
You can move up the map pack without spending a cent. It takes about fifteen hours of unglamorous work, spread over a month. Here's the order I'd do it in.
1. Build your NAP citations by hand
This is number one because it's the input Google can verify independently, and almost nobody finishes it. Open a spreadsheet, lock one version of your name, address and phone, and submit to the free directories one by one.
- Start with Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and Foursquare
- Add the data aggregators your country uses
- Then your chamber of commerce and any city business register
- Then two or three directories specific to your trade
- Record the login, the URL and the date for every one
Forty solid, matching listings beat four hundred junk ones. If you'd rather not spend the weekends, that's what our maps backlinks service does, but the DIY version works fine.
2. Finish the profile properly
Most profiles are 60% complete. Fill every field: hours, holiday hours, service areas, attributes, products, services with descriptions, and the opening date. Google's own guidance is blunt about completeness affecting local ranking.
Filling in the services list with real descriptions is ten minutes of work and it's the most skipped field in the whole product.
3. Get the primary category right
Primary category is the strongest single lever you control. Look at the three businesses ranking above you, check their primary category, and match it if it genuinely describes you. Then add secondary categories — but not ten of them.
Ranking studies from BrightLocal consistently put category selection near the top of the list. It's free to change and takes seconds.
4. Ask for reviews on a schedule
Not a blast. A schedule. Two or three requests a week, sent by the person who did the work, with a direct link. Reply to every review inside 48 hours, including the bad ones, and mention the city and service naturally in the reply.
Reviews on other platforms count too — that's why review backlinks matter beyond the star rating.

5. Fix the website side
- Put the full NAP in the footer as text, not inside an image
- Add LocalBusiness schema with the same address string
- Build one page per city you actually serve, with real content on each
- Embed a map on the contact page
- Make the phone number a tap-to-call link on mobile
The rest of the checklist
Post to your profile weekly. Upload geotagged photos monthly — original ones, not stock. Answer the Q&A section yourself with real questions customers ask. Keep hours accurate around holidays, since wrong hours generate the complaints that get profiles suspended.
Proximity still dominates, and you can't change where you are. What you can change is everything above. For the sequence in a single pass, see our local backlinks page, or read what are NAP backlinks if any of this is new.
