Do social media profiles and backlinks help local SEO?

Social links are nofollowed. Google has said repeatedly that social signals aren't a direct ranking factor. Both of those are true, and social profiles still earn their place in a local SEO plan.

The short answer

They don't push you up the map pack on their own. They do three other things well: they occupy your brand SERP, they act as consistent NAP citations, and they get indexed fast, which helps a new business get discovered at all.

Where they actually help

  • Brand search control — a Facebook page, LinkedIn company page and Instagram profile usually fill three of your top ten brand results
  • NAP consistency — most platforms have proper address and phone fields that get crawled
  • Discovery — new domains get crawled faster when linked from high-crawl-rate platforms
  • Reviews — Facebook recommendations still surface in some knowledge panels

None of that is glamorous, which is why it gets skipped. It's also cheap: our social media backlinks build is the lowest-priced thing we sell for a reason.

A small test, and what it showed

We took twelve single-location clients with no social presence — six trades, six clinics — and built twelve matching profiles each, with identical NAP and no other changes for eight weeks.

  • Map pack positions: essentially flat. Median movement was under half a position.
  • Brand SERP: an average of 3.4 of the top ten results became owned properties, up from 1.2
  • Indexation: 9 of 12 profiles indexed within 14 days
  • Referral traffic: negligible, under 1% of sessions
Social profiles didn't move rankings. They moved who owns the first page for the business name — which is what buyers actually see.

Small sample, no control group, so treat it as a directional read rather than proof. It matches what larger surveys report: social sits low on the ranking factor lists but never at zero.

Which profiles are worth setting up

Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and X cover the bulk of it. Add Nextdoor if you're a home service. Add a Google Business Profile post cadence, which is technically social and does affect engagement signals.

Fill the about, address and phone fields on every single one, then stop. An abandoned profile with the right NAP still does its job. Pair it with review backlinks if you want the brand SERP to look strong rather than just full.
